Dietary vitamin E intake in metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease and all-cause/cause-specific mortality

Aims We investigated the independent association between dietary vitamin E intake among individuals with metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and all-cause and cause-specific mortality in a representative sample of the USA. Methods We used the 2007–2014 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with mortality follow-up through 2019 (median: 8.6 years). Cox regression models were used to assess the association between dietary vitamin E intake in MASLD and all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Results Among the 10 193 individuals with MASLD (mean age: 46.8 years and male: 48.0%), greater dietary vitamin E intake was correlated with a gradual reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality, which remained significant after adjustment for clinical and metabolic risk factors (hazard ratio: 0.68, 95% confidence interval: 0.50–0.94 for the fourth quartile compared with the first quartile; P for trend = 0.018). This association remained more pronounced in older populations, males, and non-Hispanic Whites than in their counterparts. Increased dietary vitamin E intake demonstrated trends associated with reduced cancer-related mortality. Conclusion Higher dietary vitamin E intake in MASLD was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality.
