The Perceptions of the New Generation of Chinese Malaysian about China—— An Analysis Based on Fieldwork

This article examines the new generation of overseas Chinese 's perceptions on China through three perspectives: their concerns of the news about China; the ways in which they interact with China and the destinations where they choose for studying abroad. The result shows that age,educational level and blood( Chinese or mixed) are the factors that influence their perceptions on China. The major interactions between the oversea Chinese in Malaysia and China are through travelling to Mainland, Taiwan and attending activities by Chinese associations in Malaysia. In general,the new generation of Chinese Malaysian's perception on China is positive and it keeps strong ethnic and cultural identities,although the China image among them needs to improve because their understanding of China is not thorough.
