Thrombelastography (TEG) and thromboelastometry (TEM) enable a more complete evaluation of clot initiation, formation, and stability compared with standard laboratory methods. The main uses of TEG and TEM have been to monitor blood-component therapy during surgery. These techniques use plasma and the addition of buffered reagents, which limits their relevance to overall dynamics of clot formation in whole blood. By contrast, TEG and TEM measure coagulation kinetics in whole blood, providing a more thorough assessment of hemostatic function.
