Abstract The general matrix formulation developed in a previous paper for calculating dynamical electron diffraction from an assembly of crystal slabs and reflection from surfaces of semi-infinite bulk crystals is used to investigate the effects of surface layers scattering on RHEED reflected beam amplitudes. The general computing procedure is illustrated by reference to a symmetric two-beam and a general four-beam Bragg case. Applications are made to crystal systems containing relaxed or reconstructed surface layers.
