Because of the importance of mnetalography to the technolagy of titanium and because of the current interest in titanium technology, it is essential that the metallurgists working with titanium understand its metallography. In this report emphasis is placed on the microstructures of titanium and its alloys. The report contains both a general description of titanium metallegraphy as it is affected by composition and thermal treatment and specific illustrations of microstructures of commercial alloys ss they are sffected by fabrication and thermal treatments. An index is provided for the various strutures illustrated in the sections on commercial alloys. A glossary of terms that are often used in describing titanium microstructures is given. Methods of preparing titanium samples for metallographic examination are described. (auth)
