Influences of different medium on the human hair follicle culture

Objective:To evaluate the effects of different medium on the human hair follicle culture.Methods:The single hair follicle from human scalp was separated and cultured in DMEM with 10% fetal calf serum(FCS),serum-free DMEM and Williams E medium respectively.The length of hair follicle and its growth rate were measured and calculated,and its morphological changes were observed.[WT5HZ]Results:The hair follicle grew slowly and distorted early in DMEM with 10% fetal calf serum.When hair follicle cultured in serum-free DMEM,its growth period lengthened distinctly and its morphology and structure kept well,but its growth rate had no obvious difference in contrast to that cultured with serum in the first 3 days.In Williams E medium,the hair follicle grew faster than in the forementioned two mediums.It was more suitable for hair follicle culture.[WT5HZ]Conclusion:DMEM with 10% FCS doesn't suit for hair follicle culture,while Williams E medium might be more beneficial to hair follicle culture than serum-free DMEM.
