A Cognitive Study on "上" in "V 得上" Structure : From the Perspective of Metaphor and Metonymy

Metaphor and metonymy are two important cognitive means in the process of semantic extension. This paper examines the semantic extension of ‘上’ in ‘V得上’ from the perspective of metaphor and metonymy. This paper summarizes the meanings of ‘上’ in ‘V得上’ according to the BCC corpus and finds out the prototypical meanings and the non-prototypical meanings. And then analyzes these meanings by metaphor and metonymy.
