It is customary to discern disability (psysiological) glare and discomfort (psychological) glare. Although both seem to have a common base, it is possible that in practice some lighting installations show discomfort only, and others present both kinds of glare. It is generally accepted, however, that an installation can be considered as good only when it is free from both kinds of glare. Some critical remarks are made concerning the assessment of glare. Methods for calculating discomfort glare are presented partially based on recent research work. More research is needed, however, to define the borderline between acceptable and non-acceptable glare for different types of roads. A comparison is made between calculated glare ratings (expressed in glare mark G) and observations on existing roads. /TRRL/
