Dancing hierarchies — dance in society

Women’s position in dance is affected by a complex set of historical and cultural factors. The many aspects of dance production, which include dance training, the organisation of dance institutions, the funding policies and critics’ responses to dance work, all influence women’s role in dance. A brief historical account of dance, together with an analysis of the production of dance, will form a framework for the consideration of women’s contributions to the art.
