Aim: To investigate the levels of IGF-1 and EGF in serum and vitrectomy specimens of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Methods: The serum and vitrectomy specimens of 20 cases of proliferative diabetic retinopathy complicated with different extents of proliferative vitreoretinophy (PVR) and the serum of 20 cases of health people was collected. Ten cases of vitrectomy specimens were collected as normal control group. The levels of IGF-1 and EGF in serum and vitrectomy specimens were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results: The levels of IGF-1 and EGF in serum and vitrectomy specimens were higher than those of normal control group ( P 0.01). The levels of IGF-1 and EGF in vitrectomy specimens and serum had no statistical significance ( P 0.05). Conclusion: IGF-1 and EGF highly express in serum and vitrectomy specimens of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy. IGF-1 and EGF may play an important role in the genesis and development of proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
