To find an appropriate description method of particle size distribution of thick pastes, the feasibility of laser particle size analysis used for thick pastes by contrast with the sieving method experiment was studied taking the coal slime as a representation. The results show that the laser size method is more sensitive for the small size range measurement. Comparing with the sieving method, the laser size method is more applicative for coal slime to analyze particle size. It is reasonable to infer that it is also applicative for other kind of thick pastes.
