JAPANESE EXPERIENCE IN TRANSPORTATION NOISE CONTROL ---INTERNOISE 84. INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION FOR NOISE CONTROL. PROCEEDINGS 1984 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NOISE CONTROL ENGINEERING, HONOLULU, HAWAII, 3-5 DECEMBER 1984, VOLUMES 1 AND 2.
This is a brief keynote paper providing essential background for understanding the development of noise control activities in Japan over the years. A general historical overview precedes specific sections on road traffic noise, aircraft noise and high-speed railway noise. In 1983, the Japanese standard of noise measurement method was revised, based on iso 1996. The paper gives some specific examples of noise measurement projects, and mentions indirect measures to relieve noise exposure levels, such as bypasses, as well as examples of direct action to prevent noise at source.
