ON LEGITIMACY, LEGITIMATION, AND ORGANIZATIONS: A CRITICAL REVIEW AND INTEGRATIVE THEORETICAL MODEL.

This paper reviews the use of the legitimacy concept and presents a model integrating resource-exchange and communication-based perspectives. The review critiques tautologies and teleologies deriving from insufficiently grounded abstract analyses. The model shows that legitimation comes from constituencies through conferral of resources and communication of good will.
