Objective To evaluate safety and efficiency of low dose fentanyl for postoperative agitation in children with adenoidectomy-tonsillectomy.Methods Forty children undergoing selected adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy were randomly divided into two groups based on the table of random number: fentanyl group (group F) and control group (group C). After venous induction, the general anesthesia was maintained with remifentanil and propofol. At the end of operation fentanyl was intravenously administrated at dose of 0.5 μg/kg. SBP, DBP, HR, saturation oxygen (SpO2) and bispectral index (BIS) were recorded at time points of tracheal extubation(T1), respiration recovery(T2), awake(T3) and leaving operation room(T4), respectively. Meanwhile, the duration from T1 to T2 (T1-T2) and from T2 to T3 (T2-T3) were recorded, as well as score of postoperative agitation of T4.Results Compared to group C, the score of postoperative agitation of T4 was significantly reduced in group F(P0.05). And the duration of T2-T3 in group F was significantly longer than that in group C(P0.05).Conclusion Administration of low dose of fentanyl in children undergoing tonsillectomy-adenoidectomy is safe and can reduce postoperative agitation.
