S ince an arc on any curve is made up of a lot of little bits of straight lines joined end to end, if we could add all these little bits, we would get the length of the arc. But we have seen that to add a lot of little bits together is precisely what is called integration, so that it is likely that, since we know how to integrate, we can find also the length of an arc on any curve, provided that the equation of the curve is such that it lends itself to integration.
