Satellites placed in the GEO orbits face stringent requirements of complying with various MIL-standards to withstand the harsh environment. The power supplies used in these satellites also need to minimize size, weight, power, and cost. Microchip has a 60-year legacy of flight heritage of building space power products and has proven capabilities of providing highly customized solutions for space power applications. Considering the need of this market to provide more standardized yet configurable power solutions, Microchip released the SA50 series isolated DC-DC power converters. The SA50-28 family, featuring a 28V nominal input, is the latest addition to this series. This paper presents the benefits, applications, construction, configurations, electrical performance, and reliability of the SA50-28 series. The SA50-28 family has already found its utility in various mission critical space power applications. Greater proliferation of this DC-DC power converter family in space and military applications is expected.
