The energy spread of metal ions drawn from their liquid

Measurements of the spread of energy of mass-analysed positive ions emitted from a liquid gold ion source have shown that ions with a single charge have a broader distribution than have ions with a double charge. A model is proposed which attributes the spread to charge transfer in the vapour cloud close to the emitting region and which gives a good qualitative account of the observations.
