Swarming Honey Bees Guided by Pheromones1

A swarm of honey bees, Apis mellijera L., will fly to a new homesite only if accompanied by a queen whose presence the swarm perceives through her release of 9-oxo-trans-2-decenoic acid. The airborne swarm, together with its queen, is led by worker bees releasing Nassanoff pheromone.
