Abstract Various polyols were evaluated as plasticizers for starch‐polyvinyl alcohol films. Glycol glycoside, an experimental polyol made from starch and ethylene glycol, and sorbitol were highly effective plasticizers alone and in combination with small amounts of glycerol. Glycol glycoside is an especially attractive plasticizer because of its low production cost. Glucose and sucrose performed well in combination with glycerol or sorbitol.
