Cholesterol crystals and their implications in pleural effusion fluids

The presence of cholesterol crystals is an important cytological finding in pleural effusions. They are not restricted to rheumatoid arthritis and tuberculosis but may occur in subacute effusions due to other causes, including COVID‐19 pneumonia and pneumothorax.
