PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence, clinical manifestation and prognosis of malocclusion after TMJ arthroscopic disc reposition and fixation. METHODS: From November 2005 to August 2006. 211 patients with 270 joints underwent TMJ arthroscopic disc reposition and fixation. Every patient's occlusion was recorded preoperatively and at different time after operation. All patients were followed up for at least 49 days. Chi-square test was applied to analyze the incidence of malocclusion with SAS 6.12 software package. RESULTS: After arthroscopic disc reposition and fixation, malocclusion occurred in all patients. With time going on, 85.8% patients recovered in 28 days, while malocclusion lasted in 14.2% patients up to 49 days. There was no significant difference in the incidence of maloeelusion from 28 days to 49 days (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Malocclusion would occur after TMJ arthroscopic disc reposition and fixation. Most of them would recover in 28 days after operation. However, if malocclusion lasts for 28 days, intermaxillary elastic traction is highly recommended.
