C57BL/6 (H-2b) mice were grafted with skin from DBA/1 (H-2q) mice and the resultant hemagglutinin titers were observed both in series undergoing graft rejection and in series undergoing surgical excision of the graft just prior to the onset of rejection. Excision of both first- and second-set grafts produced an accelerated rise in the hemagglutinin titer. Elevated hemagglutinin titers were then produced in other C57BL/6 mice by two or more DBA/1 skin grafts and the effects of applications of further DBA/1 grafts were observed. These grafts were found to produce an early transient fall in pre-existent hemagglutinin titers prior to their anticipated rise in response to the challenging graft. The implications of these observations are discussed.
