Reactions of solvated electrons, esol−, have been studied at high concentration of esol− scavengers in water and some aliphatic alcohols. The initial yield of esol− in all solvents studied was reduced in the presence of a high concentration of scavengers, and exhibited a semilogarithmic dependence on the scavenger concentration. There is a correlation between the efficiency, 1/C37, of a scavenger in reducing the initial yield of esol− and the reaction rate constant kesol−, measured at high concentration of the scavenger with esol−: namely kesol− · C37=constant The constant is about 1·0 × 1010s−in water, 5 × 109s−in ethanol. These results suggest that there are reactive precursors to esol− in both water and alcohols.
