ACUTE TOXICITY STUDIES ON 1, 1, 1-TRIFLUOROPENTANE-2, 4-DIONE AND 2, 2, 6, 6-TETRAMETHYLHEPTANE-3, 5-DIONE.

Acute toxicity studies on 1,1,1-trifluoropentane-2,4-dione (trifluoroacetylacetone) and on 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione (dipivaloylmethane) are described. Tests conducted include acute oral toxicity, acute dermal toxicity, acute vapor inhalation toxicity, eye irritation and primary skin irritation. The results of the tests for 1,1,1-trifluoropentane-2,4-dione are: acute oral toxicity, LD50 = 664 mg/kg; acute dermal toxicity, LD50 = 5.2 g/kg; acute vapor inhalation toxicity, LC50 = 4.93 mg/L air. It was also rated moderately irritating to the eyes and severely irritating to the skin. For 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione the data indicate: acute oral toxicity, 7.6 g/kg; acute dermal toxicity, >10.2 g/kg; acute vapor inhalation toxicity, >2.83 mg/L air; eye irritation test, minimally irritating; skin irritation test, moderately irritating. The above results permit assignment of the rating by Federal Hazardous Substances Labeling Act criteria of 'Toxic' to 1,1,1-trifluoropentane-2,4-dione and 'Not Toxic' to 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione.
