DEVELOPMENT OF WHITE LIGHT SOURCES

The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2014 has been awarded for the invention of efficient blue light emitting diodes (LED) which has which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources. In this paper the history of the development of white light sources, starting from incandescent lamps, and the physics behind the sources have been discussed.
