A chelating starch(SMAEN) containing multiple amidocyanogen and acyl functions was successfully synthesized using starch as raw materials which grafted by methyl acrylate, then reacted with diethylenetriamine. This chelating starch was used to chelate copper(Ⅱ) ion, then determining the concentration of the metal ion solution before and after chelating by atomic absorption spectrometry, and discussed the influence of the metal ion solution, chelating time and the added capacity of chelator. The experiment measured the chelating capacity of this chelator to copper(Ⅱ) ion reached 2.69 mmol/g of dried SMAEN,this proved the chelator possessing perfectable chelating capability.
