Circular RNA (circRNA) is generated via intronic complementary sequence (ICS)-driven, RNA binding protein (RBP)-driven, or lariat-mediated back-splicing (BS) biogenesis models. The physiological and pathological functions of circRNAs occur through miRNA sponging, interacting with circRNA binding proteins (cRBPs), protein translation, or transcriptional regulation. CircRNAs play roles in regulation of cancer development, cardiovascular diseases, neurogenesis and neurological disorders, and metabolic diseases.
