Recently in Science, X.-S. Meng et al. described biomaterials that resist the formation of microcracks. Similarly to high-toughness nacre, these materials are also found in crustaceans. The hinge of Cristaria plicata combines nacre-like layering and fan-like organization of inorganic sheets, potentially enabling a wide range of applications.
