Data-as-an-Asset: Challenges and Future Directions

Nowadays, data are a strategic resource upon which organizations make decisions, so they plan their future and sustain their growth. This article introduces a Data-as-an-Asset (DaaA) model. It allows the elevation of data to the level of asset. The purpose is to manage data as a “physical” asset from four interrelated perspectives denoted by depreciation, transferability, disposability, and convertibility. Each perspective sheds light on how data progresses over time and what factors impact this progress. A set of challenges and future directions related to promoting the adoption of DaaA among organizations are also discussed in the article.
