ELLIS (Anti-Locust Research Centre, London) (With 4 Figures) (Rec. 10-XII-1961) INTRODUCTION Locusts are highly gregarious insects and when present in numbers the hoppers (nymphs) live together in bands and the adults in swarms that vary in content from a few hundred to a few million individuals. The hoppers within a band are closely packed and frequently touch each other, while the outer edge of the band is generally clearly defined. Within a breeding area bands are found at irregular intervals, and the ground between them
