Using a low chromium steel, a work has been done on acicular pattern observed in austenite formed by heating of the steel at 2°C/min with initial acicular structure.Detailed metallographic study and electron microprobe analyses have proved that acicular patterns in austenite relate to the image brought by etching due to the segregation of manganese in austenite, caused by the partition of manganese between acicular ferrite and austenite produced during α→γ transforma tion of the steel with acicular structure.
