Purpose This study aims to examine whether the deep penetration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology offers a viable pathway to address the issue of insufficient motivation in green technology innovation (GTI), and explores the role of dynamic capabilities (DC) within this framework. Design/methodology/approach Based on the dynamic capability theory, this paper takes the Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2012 to 2023 as samples, and uses the difference-in-differences model to empirically analyze the impact of AI knowledge spilversations on the performance of GTI of enterprises. Findings The study found that AI knowledge spillover promoted the development of GTI, and the promoting effect was more obvious in enterprises with low AI technology accumulation level and low data factor utilization level. In addition, AI knowledge spillover will promote the absorptive capacity, innovation ability, adaptability and overall DC of enterprises and then promote the innovation performance of green technology. Originality/value The conclusion provides empirical evidence and practical enlightenment for enterprises to deal with strategic adjustment and government to formulate policies.
