This presenter symposium explores in greater depth the means by which relational forces at the interpersonal (as opposed to the collective) level shape and influence individuals’ identity development (Lepisto, Crosina, & Pratt, 2014; Petriglieri & Obodaru, 2016; Sluss & Ashforth, 2007) in ways that can impact important organizational outcomes. Our four presentations explore both unidirectional and reciprocal effects of interpersonal interactions on individuals’ identity development and illustrate the potential of interpersonal interactions to influence current and future relational identities. By highlighting these unique perspectives, we further scholarly understandings of the relational underpinnings of identity development, while demonstrating the influence of interpersonal interactions on a range of identity-related conditions that facilitate individuals' organizational entry, commitment, performance, and retention.
