It was reported that potassium fluotitanate(K2TiF6) as a kind of simple flame retardant, was used to modify the down fiber to get permanent flame retardant performance. The fire resistance and thermal degradation of down treated with flame retardant were studied by IR,char yield, limiting oxygenindex(LOI),thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).It was found that compared to pure down fiber,in the treated down, there were apparently high limiting oxygen index, high char yield, low thermal degradation onset temperature and thermal stability, besides narrow thermal temperature range. In one word, fire resistance improved remarkably, when 36.5%~41.8% of limiting oxygen index was obtained, compared to.23% of that of pure down.
