Using weather modification to subdue severe weather

There is limited public discourse and understanding about the history and science of weather modification, though scientists have researched, tested, and implemented numerous methods of weather interventions for six decades. The general trend of increasing exposure to extreme weather events prompts us to offer a summary and general evaluation of weather modification technologies. In this chapter, we summarize information about weather modification activity globally with an emphasis on the potential for reducing the severity of and damages from extreme weather. The chapter also presents a brief discussion of approaches to evaluating benefits and costs of such programs.
