Getah virus (GETV) is a mosquito-borne arbovirus, which can cause the death of the newborn piglets 5-10 days after birth and in pregnant sows exhibiting stillbirths or fetal mummies. Up to now, vaccine immunization is still an important means to prevent and control emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Hence, the screening vaccine candidate is important for the development and application of vaccine. The study was carried out using three strains and one subculture strain of GETV of swine for screening vaccine candidate, the above four strains were selected from clinical isolates based on comprehensive analysis of amino acid sequence, genetic evolution, virus proliferation rate and geographical location of them. We comparatively studied the proliferation characteristics, serum specific IgG antibody level, neutralizing antibody level and immune protection of the above four strains, only GETV-V1 showed the high antibody levels that persist after 6 weeks of immunization and 66.1% embryo protection rate in pregnant dams. After comprehensive analysis of immune indexes such as immune antibody, virus shedding period and histopathological damage, we finally screened GETV-V1 strain as a vaccine candidate GETV-V1. Our results could provide a candidate strain for the development of an inactivated vaccine, and provide data for evaluating the immune efficacy of vaccines against GETV in swine.
