Abstract Ammonia is produced from nitrogen and hydrogen. In this chapter, the historical development of synthetic ammonia synthesis is discussed, starting with the premise of a Malthusian disaster, after which biological nitrogen fixation and synthetic nitrogen fixation are elaborated upon. The techno-economic aspects of the electrolysis- and biomass-based, green ammonia synthesis processes, based on the current Haber–Bosch process, are the focus of the main part of this chapter. Afterwards, an overview is provided with nonconventional technologies, which may be relevant for future applications.
