A novel process of the slight melting of metal surface by the broadened transferred arc is proposed, using magnetically oscillating transferred arc. The laboratory scale arc heating experiments have been conducted. In order to simulate a hot steel slab just after the continuous casting process, a sample has been preheated by induction heating. The sample movement during arc heating is perpendicular to the arc oscillation. The wide surface area is treated and melted. The heating histories by the combination of induction preheating and arc heating are measured. Experimental results are compared to the ones obtained by the total simulator, which analyze the heating history of sample, using the results from some elemental simulators, such as electromagnetic analysis of induction heating, 3D MHD transferred arc analysis, and so on. The agreement between experiments and numerical simulation is good. As the surface of the melted samples is smooth and sample has good cleanliness evaluated by microscope observation in cross-section, the proposed process using broadened transferred arc is considered to be the possible alternative of surface scarfing.
