A novel use of laser light to improve on the machining qualities of various metals, superalloys and ceramics is described. The laser beam is focused on the sample. ahead of a cutting tool and the sample is machined in an otherwise concentional manner. Evidence is presented demonstrating smoother cuts, reduced tool force and improved machining of hitherto difficult to machine materials. A discussion is presented of the potential of laser assisted ot spot machining to improve the speed and accuracy of the machining process, to increase the fatigue and wear resistance of surfaces and to prolong tool life.
