Polygonatum, a versatile plant known for both its medicinal and food uses, exhibits a wide array of beneficial properties with minimal side effects, making it highly promising for the creation of health-oriented products. This review comprehensively examines the active constituents of Polygonatum, delving into their detailed characterization. Additionally, it sheds light on the various bioactive functions of Polygonatum and elucidates the underlying mechanisms governing these functions. Despite the extensive focus on Polygonatum's medicinal aspects in recent studies, its potential applications in the food industry have been largely overlooked. Consequently, this review emphasizes the practical utilization of Polygonatum in food-related contexts. By emphasizing the significance of integrating Polygonatum into the food sector, this review not only presents novel avenues for Polygonatum development but also opens doors for exploring the potentials of other medicinal and edible plant.
