Role of Phytoconstituents in Augmenting Hair Growth

Introduction: Globally, alopecia, or hair loss, affects a significant portion of the population. Although there are synthetic medication-based treatments for alopecia, these have caused several adverse effects in many people. Since ancient times, natural products have been used and have been safe, with few negative effects, making them a suitable and effective solution for treating the condition. Methods: A literature search was conducted in the scientific database using the keywords “alopecia, phytoconstituents, and herbals”. This review includes a collection of reports from ScienceDirect, Scholar Google, and PubMed, all searched up to 2024. A total of 240 articles were included, with an exponential growth in the number of articles published from 2000 to 2024. Results: It discusses different types of alopecia, such as androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata, scarring alopecia, delving into their mechanisms and the challenges faced by those experiencing hair loss, including self-esteem issues and social stigma. The document details both synthetic and herbal hair loss treatments, emphasizing the advantages of herbal remedies, which typically have fewer side effects and encourage a holistic approach to hair health. Discussion: This document provides a comprehensive overview of phytoconstituents for combating baldness, exploring key phytochemicals such as caffeine, capsaicin, and various essential oils, and highlighting their potential benefits for promoting hair growth and improving overall scalp health. Conclusion: The document underscores the importance of herbal treatments as sustainable and effective alternatives to synthetic drugs, advocating for a more personalized approach to hair care through the use of natural remedies.
