The Multiple Tuned Mass Damper (MTMD) is a dynamic vibration-absorbing group consisting of a great number of tuned mass dampers with different frequencies, different damping and different mass. The control effectiveness of MTMD over the structure vibration under wide-band excitation is better than that of Single Tuned Mass Damper (STMD). Aimed at the buffeting characteristics of long-span bridges under the action of turbulence wind, the vibration-suppressing mechanism of MTMD is analyzed taking Yangpu bridge in Shanghai of China as an example. The influence of the frequency band width, damping ratio and frequency ratio of MTMD on vibration-absorbing effectiveness and equivalent damping ratio is discussed through numerical analysis. The vibration-suppressing performance of MTMD is compared with that of STMD.
