Geotechnical data analysis and correlation development for sandy soils – a case study using GIS

Site examination is an essential component of the proposed structure for the project planning. These evaluations and suggestions establish the planning and development of structural designing. The Soil Bore log Hole (BH) Test results has been utilized to give relationships between Standard Penetration Number (Sn) and angle of Internal friction parameter "ɸ" of soils. Through this relationship, it will be convenient to guess these two significant soil parameters. This investigation is an effort to assess ɸ of frictional soils, based on Number value for a specific region. The field Sn of about thirty-nine location points (boreholes) were executed in sandy soils of study area. The regression analysis was done and correlation equations were also developed using the available data. Also, some zonation maps of Soil type are presented using spatial analysis technique of Arc GIS software. It is concluded that the study area being close to of river Sutlej, the soil type is loose sand to compact sand. The soil at most locations is poorly graded Sand (SP) and Sandy Silt (SM), the sand content, Sn and Φ with depth. The correlation equation between Sn value and angles: Φ = 21.49 N 0.131. The coeficient of determinatios R2 is 0.92. Therefore the the results may be useful in estimation of geotechnical properties and project planning.
