The effect of various cations and anions in inorganic salt solutions on the viscosity of polyacrylamide was studied. The viscosity loss of polyacrylamide could be mainly ascribed to the presence of divalent cations such as Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . The viscosity of polyacrylamide in the highly mineralized oilfield outflow water was maintained with the addition of stabilizing agents, and the result was satisfying.
