The Purposed Value of Body Mass Index, Waist Circumference and Waist to Hip Ratio Used as Indexes Predicting Hypertension in Middle-age Intellectuals

Objective:To study the relationship between body mass index (BMI), Waist circumference(WC)and waist hip ratio(WHR) and blood pressure in population. Method: A total of 1191 people from 35 years old to 65 years old intellectuals in Guangzhou were surveyed. Height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and blood pressure were measured. The effects of WHR, WC and BMI on the average blood pressure and the prevalence of hypertension in crowd were analyzed by dividing WHR,WC and BMI into trisect. Result: The average blood pressures level and the prevalence of hypertension of male and female were increased significantly with the increase of BMI as well as with the increase of WC and also WHR (P0.05). Conclusion: BMI,WC and WHR are valid indices to predict the hypertension risks. Controlling BMI,WC and WHR can effectively prevention and cure hypertension.
