The results of the 3-year-long field monitoring of the content of carbon in the biomass of the virgin and arable chestnut soils of the Tugnui hollow of Transbaikalia are presented. This indicator was evaluated in comparison with similar indicators of other regions. A significant relationship between the change of temperature and carbon quantity in microbian biomass (C-biomass) in the soils was revealed. The deficiency of moisture in the soils limited the growth of microorganisms during some periods of vegetation. The humidity influences both the activity of plants and the supply of microorganisms by the substratum and biogenic elements.
