Alcohol synthesis based on the S N 2 reactions of alkyl halides with the squarate dianion

We developed a convenient method for transforming alkyl halides into the corresponding alcohols through an S N 2 reaction using the squarate anion, prepared from squaric acid and a base, followed by a one-pot hydrolysis of the resulting squaric esters.
