摘要
This study aims to examine how independent bookstores in China have evolved through distinct typological structures and cultural functions, and to analyze their spatial and social significance within the contemporary cultural landscape. Specifically, it explores the typological characteristics and operational structures of Chinese independent bookstores, and investigates how these structural differences influence cultural functions and the formation of publishing culture. Employing literature analysis and case studies, the research identifies representative bookstores across major categories—such as specialty bookstores (特色书店), community bookstores (社区书店), individual bookstores (个体书店), and rural bookstores (乡村书店)—to compare their structural features and cultural roles. The findings indicate that Chinese independent bookstores function not merely as commercial retail spaces but as cultural hubs that support community engagement and public culture through spatial renewal, curation, and cultural programming. Furthermore, specialty bookstores contribute to shaping urban cultural identity, community bookstores expand local cultural networks, individual bookstores form intimate cultural spheres grounded in the owner’s curatorial vision, and rural bookstores help reduce cultural disparities in underdeveloped regions. These results demonstrate that, despite institutional constraints, independent bookstores in China play a significant role in revitalizing regional culture and restructuring the publishing culture ecosystem.
