A method for the simultaneous determination of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in cigarette adhesives was established using high-performance liquid chromatography with a PAD detector. After formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in the samples were extracted with deionized water, the solution reacted with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine in an acidic medium to form 2.4-dinitrophenylhydrazone,which were separated on the thermo-C18 column(150 mm×4.6 mm,5 μm) directly.Good linearities were obtained over corresponding concentrations ranges. The limits of detection of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were 3.6 μg/L and 6.2 μg/L respectively, and the recoveries were 98.38%~103.11% and 89.37%~90.12% respectively. The RSDs for formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were below 6%.The method is simple and fast, accurate and reliable, which can be applied to quantitative analysis.
