A specific laboratory scale heatflow reaction calorimeter with a computer was developed to investigate the online calorimetry for monitoring reaction heat in stirred batch reactors. A nonlinear model that is capable of accurately describing the heat transfer dynamics of a jacket reactor was derived. An extended Kalman filter was applied to prcdicate process states and estimate model parameters. Comparison of model predications and experimental data indicated that a good agreement was achieved for the cases of the reaction system considered.
